Ed was my great uncle who used to write to me and send me the majority of the books in my library. He fueled and inspired my love of reading. He was on my mind this morning so I did some googling and found this page. I remember his jokes including his routine ones like that my grandmother stole his birthday. The memories I’ve read from others make me proud.

He was a great history teacher. I loved his class. He was funny, kind of sarcastic, and extremely knowledgeable. He often brought artifacts to class. He made history come to life

Mr. Daniel was my history teacher at Washburn HS in the 1960’s, a long time ago. He ,also, taught my sister. I was in his class when we heard about the assasination of JFK. Mr.Daniel had to calm us in our shock and distress. He , also, was my instructor for Driver’s Ed. A fine teacher and instructor, I’ll always remember him. Your family is blessed to have had him with you for so many years. Heaven receives another good one. God bless and comfort your family.

Although I didn’t have Mr. Daniels for history, it brings joy to my heart when reading about everyone’s lives that were touched by his presence, knowledge, and humor. May God bless his son and other family members that were impacted by him.

Ed was a dedicated volunteer at Penn Lake when we needed his help at Southdale Library. He agreed to transfer and became part of the Southdale Support Services team! He loved the people and the place and gave many hours and talents to complement the SS staff’s mission.
I will always remember his smile and twinkling eyes each time we visited. He was a gift to Southdale and HCL Rest in peace, Ed.

I guess you could say I was Ed’s boss while he volunteered at the Southdale library for so many years. Ed was always one of my most favorite people in the world. It was so wonderful so caring. This saddens me so much. He was so dedicated to his volunteering and was great at it.

Ed generously gave his time and talents to Hennepin County Library for over 20 years, beginning his service in 1999 at Penn Lake Library before transferring to Southdale. He continued volunteering well into his 90s, only stepping back during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Over the years, Ed contributed an incredible 13,099.75 hours of volunteer service. His dedication, warmth, and commitment left a lasting impact on our library community. He will be greatly missed. Extending my sympathies to his family.

I was a manager at Southdale Library in 2009 and had the pleasure of getting to know Ed. He had a special work station right outside my office door. He was beautiful person, a ravenous reader with an inquisitive mind and a passion for history. But what I loved most about him was the twinkle in his eye and his heart, as he shared inspired retellings of Ole and Lena jokes.
A special memory was the day I had returned from leave, in St. Louis, MO, where I had said goodbye to my mother and held her funeral. I was incredibly sad, and as manager, I felt I couldn’t share my personal grief with my staff, so I was all alone in it. I greeted Ed, and in his friendly and gracious manner, he had an Ole and Lena joke for me. I listened with rapt attention and growing delight. You see, he was from a different era, when people commonly shared long, clean jokes for amusement. It’s a lost art. My mother’s generation. She too was a wonderful storyteller, and had a store of jokes, which she artfully shared. Suddenly I wasn’t alone. My mother’s spirit was reborn, echoed in the story from Ed, a generational peer. Ed was such a lovely, gentle man, and he must have known I needed a good joke to lift my spirits. And he did. God bless you, Ed.

Mr. Daniel was my beloved home room and history teacher at Washburn High School in the 60s. He instilled in me a love of history which I took to the U of M and majored in history. He made it fun and interesting. So happy to hear that he lived a long and purposeful life.

I worked with Ed for many years at the Southdale Library. He always had a smile and joke for everyone. I can still seem him sitting in "his spot" doing his volunteer work. His help was invaluable. Thinking of some of his bad jokes makes me smile. He is definitely part of the Southdale library history. He will be missed.
