Phyllis Ann Hakseth Obituary

Phyllis Anne Hakseth (nee Berg), aged 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at St. Anthony Health & Rehabilitation after a long-fought battle with multiple myeloma.

Phyllis was born in Valley City, ND, to Reuben and Marion Berg. The family eventually moved to Motley, MN, where she and brother Don Berg graduated from Motley High School. Because it was a small school, she was able to simultaneously be her class president (Class of 1955), snare drummer in the band, and a cheerleader. Mostly she was proud to have been the only female sports reporter in the state and was written about in the newspaper down in “the Cities.”

Upon graduation, Phyllis moved to Minneapolis, MN, and put herself through school at the Minnesota School of Laboratory Technique. Soon after she took a medical technician position at the Medical Block clinic in Red Wing, MN. It was there she met Owen “Chuck” Hakseth of Hastings, MN, when he came in for an appointment. (He remembered seeing the article about her being a sports reporter.)

Phyllis and Chuck were married on December 28, 1957, in Hastings, MN. The couple had six children and spent many happy years together prior to Chuck’s passing in 1986. The family lived in a few different states before moving to Mounds View, MN, where Phyllis spent most of the last 40 years. She was an active Jehovah’s Witness in the New Brighton and Blaine congregations. She also enjoyed working as a leasing agent and caring for her beloved cats.

Phyllis is preceded in death by husband Owen “Chuck” Hakseth. Survived by children Robert (Tammy) Hakseth, Nancy (Ron) Hogan, Donald Hakseth, John Hakseth, Betty (Todd) Carlson, and Heidi Hakseth; along with 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

The family will honor her with a private interment.
