Obituary of Margery Ann Carrothers

Peg Carrothers

May 12, 1964 - October 5, 2025

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden loss of our mother, daughter, partner and friend in a tragic bicycle accident. A native of northeast Minneapolis, Peg recently moved back to the Twin Cities after two decades in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She was employed as a teaching assistant, most recently at her alma mater, Minneapolis Edison High School, where her generous spirit found satisfaction in the care of severely disabled students.

An avid camper and hiker, Peg also had a gardening business for several years and knew just about every flower, bush and tree. But her true vocation was singing. Choir and musical theater at Edison led to music studies at the College of St. Catherine and the University of Minnesota, and eventually a career as jazz vocalist, with numerous recordings to her credit. Her debut album “Blue Skies” was recently reissued in Japan after one of its songs became a surprise hit.

“Peg possessed the voice of an angel, and wrapped us in her amazing, pure sound,” a fellow singer wrote in tribute. Quick, hip, funny, fierce and “frugal to a fault” (as she liked to say), she was above all loving. She couldn’t resist the sight of a baby and delighted in birds, animals and the natural world.

She is survived by her son Eddie Carrothers, her daughter Ellie Carrothers, her loving partner Tim Campbell, her mother Nancy Erickson Nelson and her ex-husband Bill Carrothers. Peg comes from a very extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom loved her and will miss her very much. So will her many friends. We are grateful to the first responders in Columbia Heights and the staff at North Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care. Dear Peg — may you rest in peace in Heaven with Gramma!

If you wish to make a donation in Peg’s honor, we kindly request it be directed to Minnesota Jazz Education or to the Forward Fund of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association.
