Richard "Rick" Monteith Obituary

Richard “Rick” Arnold Monteith passed away unexpectedly May 31, 2025, at his home in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Born January 23, 1951, in Devils Lake, North Dakota to his parents Wayne “Cye” and Ragnhild “Rags” (Djuvstad) Monteith.

He is survived by his wife Lou Ann Shelton, his children, Dylan, Graham (Vanessa Marzolf) and Halle (Joe Farrel), his sisters, Mary Lou (Milam) Jones and Joy Sanchez, and Lou Ann’s children, Dennis (April) Shelton and daughter-in-law Caitlin Shelton.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law Gary and Iris Monteith, and brother-in-law Ron Sanchez.

Rick attended UND (University of North Dakota) where he majored in English Literature. He was a hardcore UND Hockey fan since he was a young boy. He was a poet and a lover of poetry; he met some of the Beat Poets when they visited campus in 1974.

He was enthralled with ravens and crows; the artwork in his home attests to that fact. He loved the North Shore, his hometown Devils Lake, and meeting and talking to people. Shortly after moving to their condo in Eden Prairie, he became a board member of the HOA, where he enjoyed helping the neighbors. He loved his dog Watson and the music of John Prine.

He was greatly loved and is greatly missed.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be directed to an animal shelter of your choice.

Please join us in a celebration of his life on Sunday August 3, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Surly Brewing Co, Scheid Hall, 520 Malcom Ave SE Minneapolis MN 55414.

Come and share some food and beverages along with poetry, stories, and memories of Rick.
