John Joseph McGrath Obituary

John Joseph McGrath Obituary

John Joseph McGrath, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the age of 68 after living courageously with multiple sclerosis for ten years.

John grew up in South Minneapolis, where he made lifelong friends at Annunciation Catholic School. More friendships grew at De La Salle High School, where he graduated in 1975. He loved sports and the outdoors—starting at Lynnhurst Park—early signs of the energetic spirit that defined his life.

He began his college career at St. Thomas College. Though life soon got in the way, in typical John fashion, he was determined to finish what he started—and later in life, he proudly earned his degree.

John spent over 20 years in construction at AE Conrad and married the love of his life, Diane, in 1983. Together they built a strong and loving family with their children, Michael Duffy and Megan Lynn. John found joy in the everyday—whether coaching, helping others, or sharing his signature smile and positive attitude.

Even after his MS diagnosis in 2015, John stayed active—swimming, scootering around town, and working at Stephen Donnelly Company Inc. His resilience was matched only by his devotion to family. Becoming “Papa John” to granddaughters Madelyn and Emma was one of his greatest joys.

John was preceded in death by his wife Diane, parents Edward and Helen, and brother Eddie. He is survived by children Mike and Megan (Ben) Muelken; granddaughters Madelyn and Emma; siblings Monica (John) Focht, Tim (Donna), and Mark (Nancy); sisters-in-law Sue Moe and Terri (Mike) Filas; and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.

John lived with heart, humor, and generosity. He made the world brighter for all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
