Dr. Charles "Charlie" Alward Obituary

Charles Alward, known throughout his life as Chuck, Charlie, and “Dr. Alward” to those fortunate enough to know him, passed away peacefully at home in Minneapolis on June 15, following a courageous 19-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 80.

Charlie was born in Chicago and grew up in Eagle River, WI, where he worked tirelessly on his family’s resort. Those early years instilled in him the values that shaped his life: a strong work ethic, deep sense of responsibility, and quiet perseverance.

Charlie began his medical career as a neonatologist before finding his true calling in primary care pediatrics. As a longtime physician and leader at Park Nicollet, he touched the lives of countless families. Charlie had an unmatched gift for connecting with every child he encountered, offering a steady, reassuring presence and gentle humor.

Those who knew Charlie knew they could count on him. He was dependable, principled, and deeply ethical — always showing up on time, keeping his word, and doing the right thing even when no one was watching. He was a guide, a listener, a teacher, and a source of wisdom and warmth. His legacy lives on in the kindness he modeled, the optimism he carried, and all of the lives he enriched simply by showing up and being exactly who he was.

After retiring, Charlie embraced a life of quiet creativity and connection with family and friends. Travel with his wife of 56 years, Gay, regular trips to the dog park with his devoted pup, Kota, and time with his adored grandchildren were favorite highlights.

Charlie was a devoted husband to Gay; a steady, supportive father to his children, Erika (Paul), Seth (Alesia), and Kiel (Paul); and a cherished “Papa” to seven beloved grandchildren (Lexi, Charlie, Dylan, Ava, Natalie, Beck, and Amelia). He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and John Alward.

Charlie will be remembered for the magical way he drew kids into his world, his humble strength, and his unwavering presence in the lives of those who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to DinoMights or Doctors Without Borders would honor two of Charlie's greatest passions - hockey for youth and compassionate medical care.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 24 at 1:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 3400 Dupont Ave S, Minneapolis, with a dessert reception to follow.
