Edward Wayne "Ed" Potter Obituary

Edward Wayne Potter, age 89, of Roseville, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025. A man of humble beginnings and a competitor at heart, Ed lived a full and loving life surrounded by family, faith, and friendship.

Born in January 1936 and raised in the Midway area of St. Paul in a large family of 14 siblings, Ed graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in 1954. He proudly served his country with two years of active duty in the U.S. Army and four years in the Reserves, receiving an honorable discharge in 1961. He later attended trade school to become a skilled bookbinder and printer—a career he pursued diligently to provide for his family.

Ed met the love of his life, Marlene Neudahl, and they were married on August 16, 1958, at St. Stephanus Lutheran Church. Their 66-year marriage was a testament to enduring love and faith. Together, they raised two children, Barbara Jean and Steven Wayne, and ensured they received a strong education rooted in faith and values.

An active and faithful member of both St. Stephanus Lutheran Church and Leaf Mountain Lutheran Church, Ed served on many committees over the years. In 1970, Ed and Marlene purchased land on Spitzer Lake and built a cherished family cabin—where countless memories were made fishing, puzzling, and sharing time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ed had a lifelong passion for bowling and spent many happy hours at alleys including Minnehaha and Flaherty’s. His competitive spirit and the friendships he formed there brought him great joy. He also loved fishing, watching sports, old westerns and war shows, and spending time "putzing" around the house or cabin.

His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ed had a special way of connecting with each of them, from greeting new arrivals with open arms to teaching them how to fish and giving them rides on the lawn mower at the cabin.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Chester Potter and Blanche Mary (Brown); brothers Donald, Cliff, and Kenneth; and sisters Betty (Cunnien) and Bernice (LeVasseur) and five others lost in their childhood. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene; children Barb Kloetzke (Scott) and Steve Potter (Margit); grandchildren Emily Cullen (David), Joseph (Katie), Travis, and Reilly; great-grandchildren Henry, Cameron, and Callahan; sisters Theresa (Oban), Margaret (Celentano-Brown), and Cecelia (LeVasseur); along with many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

A memorial gathering and celebration of Ed’s life will be held at St. Stephanus Lutheran Church in St. Paul on Saturday, August 16, with visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. and a service at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephanus Lutheran Church, Leaf Mountain Lutheran Church, or Grace Hospice.
