Obituary of John Leonard Mayers
1942 - 2025
John went home to be with Jesus on June 1, 2025. He resided in Oak Grove, MN with his wife Cheryl in their family home they built in 1973. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was an exceptional member of his community and church.
John was born in February of 1942 in St. Cloud, MN. John was the first of eight children born to Lucetta and Leonard Mayers of St. Joe, MN where they raised their children on their family farm. He graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School in 1960 and went on to Vocational Tech to pursue a career in electronics. He was employed by Friden, Singer and TRW as service tech & supervisor for 19 years, Wang Laboratories as Branch Manager for 5 years, Supervisor at Regions Hospital/Health Partners for 21 years and was respected for his hard work, dedication, and expertise. John retired in 2013 at the age of 71.
John met the love of his life, Cheryl after high school and they were married in November 1966 on the opening day of deer hunting! He got his "dear." Having celebrated 58 years of marriage, they were blessed with two premature babies, a girl and boy that are in heaven. Then God blessed them with 3 daughters Maria, Paula and Monica whom they love and adore. John was a dedicated family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He was a man of integrity, always putting his family’s needs above his own.
John had a love for fixing and building things. He enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, fishing, biking and volunteering for his community and his church in his free time. He was known for his sense of humor, his kind heart, and eager willingness to help others.
He is survived by his wife Cheryl, his children Maria (Scott Erickson) Eden Prairie, MN, Paula (Brian Sahlstrom) Foley, MN, and Monica (Kyle Johnson) Big Lake, MN and his 14 grandchildren (#15 arrives in September) & 2 great grandchildren, along with his siblings Tom Mayers, St. Joe, MN, Mary Jo Ebertowski (David) Albertville, MN, Bob Mayers (Alice) St. Joe, MN and Dennis Mayers, Oregon and several nieces, nephews and other family members and friends who will miss him dearly. Preceded in death by his parents Leonard & Lucetta, brothers Fred, Gerald (wife Ann) and Frank.
The Celebration of Life service will be held on June 19th at Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Ham Lake, MN. Visitation begins at 9:30am, followed by the service at 11am with a luncheon to follow. (Service will be live streamed.)
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in our hearts. We take comfort in knowing that he is now in paradise with Jesus and the family of God who have gone before him. He would want us all to find that same peace and invites you to put your trust in Jesus to also receive eternal life in heaven someday.
