Obituary of Gene Richard Piertz
Gene Richard Piertz passed away peacefully at Franciscan Health Center on May 25, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 87.
Born in Duluth, Minnesota, to John and Elsie (Viola) Piertz (Norman), Gene graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1956 and joined the Minnesota Army National Guard that same year. On July 14, 1962, he married the love of his life, Claudia Larson, beginning a lifelong journey of love, laughter, and shared adventures.
In 1962, Gene began his career as a journeyman for Duluth Local Sheet Metal 10, contributing to the construction of major regional landmarks including Miller Hill Mall, UMD, St. Luke's Hospital, and the "new" Central High School. Known for his craftsmanship, reliability, and skill, Gene was the quintessential "Mr. Fix-It," always able to repair, modify, or improve just about anything.
An avid outdoorsman, Gene was a longtime member of the Proctor Jack Meade Gun Club, earning several trap shooting awards. He found joy and peace in nature-hunting, fishing, camping across the U.S. and Canada, and even taking a bucket-list trip to Alaska with lifelong friends. Summers were often spent camping with loved ones, while winters were enjoyed as a "snowbird" in Gulf Shores, Alabama. His travels with Claudia took them as far as Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the wedding of their son Rob to Irina Smirnova.
Gene was a man of quiet strength, steadfast character, and deep faith. He was formerly a member of First United Methodist Church and a devoted member of Lester Park United Methodist Church. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees at both churches, offering his time, talents, and dependable work ethic to support and maintain the places of worship he loved.
Although often a man of few words, Gene's quick wit, well-timed zingers, and warm sense of humor left a lasting impression. He was a great listener who never forgot a face or a name. Gene whistled while he worked-literally-and surprised many with his near-encyclopedic memory of song lyrics, a beautiful singing voice, and unmatched whistling skills. He was affectionately voted "Senior Prom King" and "Whistling Wonder" at Franciscan Health Center.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gene cherished time with his family. He delighted in introducing his grandchildren to the joys of fishing and even playing dress-up with his granddaughters. He taught through example, sharing his love of nature, the satisfaction of working with one's hands, and the value of quiet strength.
Gene was a self-taught taxidermist, whittler, gardener, and deck-builder whose creations were both functional and enduring. His indestructible decks and beautifully landscaped gardens were as memorable as his hearty laugh.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Elsie (Viola) Piertz, sisters Betty Ryberg and Charlotte Piertz, and grandson Christian Piertz. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Claudia; his children Sandy (Mark) Lanthier, Jan Piertz (Paul), Marlene Piertz, and Rob (Irina) Piertz; grandchildren Jonathan (Karen), Travis (Jenny), and Nakiah Lanthier; Grace and Nina Piertz; and great-grandson Everett Lanthier.
The family offers special thanks to lifelong friend Al Carl, whose weekly visits to Gene-through all seasons and circumstances-brought comfort, laughter, and loyal companionship. His presence meant the world to Gene and the entire family. Deep gratitude also goes to the compassionate staff at Franciscan Health Center and Aspirus St. Luke's Hospice.
Many thanks to the friends and family who came to visit Gene, sharing stories and surrounding him with love and laughter in his final days. Your presence was a gift. Gene's legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, and quiet humor lives on in every life he touched. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 8, followed by the memorial service at 2:00 with a light luncheon to follow the service at First United Methodist Church, 230 E Skyline Pkwy. Burial Service will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 9, at Bethany Cemetery, 4938 Hermantown Road, Duluth, MN 55811.
