Obituary of Brendan Dennis O'Brien
Brendan Dennis O’Brien passed away at home in Minneapolis on May 18, 2025. Brendan was born in Chicago, IL on Sept 16, 1976, the third of five children and only son to Dennis and Anita O’Brien (nee Letz).
Brendan moved with his family to Northern Wisconsin in 1980. He had a love and competitive spirit for all sports but was an undeniable standout as a runner. He was a 4-time State Champion in Track and Cross Country and was named Wisconsin Male Athlete of the Year in 1994. His hard work and dedication to the sport earned him a full scholarship to the University of Minnesota.
Though Brendan was known for his competitiveness and determination, like many, he faced personal struggles that at times weighed heavily on his spirit. These quiet battles were a part of his journey, shaping his depth, sensitivity, empathy, and resilience in ways not always visible to others.
He will be remembered as a passionate and complex soul. Someone who felt deeply, lived intensely, and whose presence was profoundly powerful. His journey wasn’t always easy, but it was real, and those who knew him best saw both the boldness and the authenticity he possessed.
Through all of life’s ups and downs he remained, first and foremost, a proud father to Ian.
Brendan is preceded in death by his father Dennis O’Brien and sister Erin O’Brien. He is survived by his son Ian, his mother Anita, sisters Shannon (Jason Van Hunnik), Kerry, Colleen (Mark Andrews) niece and nephews Mira, Aidan and Jack and many friends and family.
A celebration of life will be held in Rhinelander at a later date.
