Obituary of William Nelson
William “Willie” James Nelson, 66, of Hill City, MN, passed away on May 21, 2025 at his home surrounded by loved ones, after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on June 11, 1958 in Minneapolis, MN to Jim and Sally Nelson, Willie was raised in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1977. He attended college briefly before taking a job with Coca-Cola.
On April 12, 1980, Willie married Sheryl Trepanier in Swatara, MN. The couple made their home in the Hill City area and raised two children, Jeremy and Lisa. Willie worked at Blandex and before joining Blandin Paper Company in 1983, where he remained until retiring in 2014.
Deeply committed to his community, Willie served on the Hill City Fire Department from 1998-2021 in various roles, including Chief and first responder. He was also an active member of the Hill City Lion’s Club and Northwoods ATV Club.
Willie enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, smoking meats, making maple syrup, hunting, fishing, traveling- especially cruising, and lending a hand to anyone in need. After retirement, he earned his ATV and Snowmobile Safety Instructor certification. Willie excelled at many things in life—but most of all, he mastered the art of being a grandpa. He was always proud and willing to brag about his grandchildren’s endeavors.
Willie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sheryl; children Jeremy (Erin) Nelson; Lisa (Jacob) Kangas and six grandchildren; Kaylee, James, Jaxton, Logan, Brenna, and adopted grandson Max; his brother Jeff (Sandy) Nelson; sister Sue (Scott) Johnson; sister in law Shelley (Steve) Duff; along with numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends.
A celebration of life will take place on July 12th, 2025 from 2:00pm-6:00pm at his family home. Family and friends are welcome to attend to honor and celebrate Willie’s life.
Arrangements entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota- Duluth.
