Obituary of Paul Schmidt
Paul Schmidt, 78, of Rosemount, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Blakely, MN, on September 19, 1946, Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend. His warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to those he loved will be remembered always.
Paul grew up in Belle Plaine, MN, and pursued his education at Mankato State University, where he earned a master’s degree in teaching. He began his teaching career at Rosemount Middle School in the “old building” and later continued at Valley Middle School. As an educator and coach, Paul touched the lives of countless students and colleagues with his patience, kindness, and quiet wisdom.
Outside the classroom, Paul found great joy in fishing and watching the horses at the racetrack. We know he’s in heaven with his brothers-in-law and buddies “talking smart” and belly laughing over memories of better times.
Above all, his greatest love was Kay—his high school sweetheart and best friend. Their 56 years of marriage were a testament to their deep bond and enduring love. Paul’s greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa.” Through his stories, love, and gentle presence, he created lasting memories that will forever live on in their hearts.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Frieda, and his infant sisters, Audrey and Lois.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Kay Schmidt, and their four children: Sarah Monn (Kevin), Jenna Williams (Joe), Tim Schmidt (Denise), and Mark Schmidt. He was a proud and devoted Papa to his grandchildren: Alexa, Abby (Zach), and Charlie Monn; Jack, Sophie, and Henry Williams; Devon and Joe Schmidt; and Emily Schmidt. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Mueller (Gary), and brother, Dan Schmidt (Naomi); in-laws Dick and JoAnn Schmit, Helen Hoelz, Judie Walerius, and Gust and Jackie Barbes; as well as many extended family members and close friends.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 13900 Biscayne Ave. W, Rosemount, MN, on Wednesday, June 4, at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior. A luncheon will follow.
