Obituary of Wally Mattson

Wallace “Wally” Ernest Mattson passed away peacefully at his home May 16, 2025.

Wally was born November 12, 1940, the day after the infamous Armistice Day Blizzard.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Lucille (Merritt) and Ernest Mattson of Duluth Township, Minnesota.

Wally loved his family and valued his friends.  He was an amateur lepidopterist and cherished the natural world.  He was a lifelong learner, a world traveler, avid reader and writer.  He enjoyed good conversations at his favorite coffee shop and especially on a favorite Northshore beach around a campfire with “the Moonies”.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille Holzemer of 25 years and by his daughter, Cynthia Mattson and son, Michael Mattson (Kerry Peck); grandchildren, Jeffrey Mattson, Bretta Carney, Michelle Stramel, Krista Mattson, and Eva Mattson; great-grandson, Dylan Mattson and great-great-grandsons, Corey and Eli Mattson.  He is also survived by his sisters, Priscilla Sklors, Barbara Hollinday and brother, Robert (Bonnie) Mattson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Friday, July 11 at 2:00 pm at the Duluth Township Hall, 6092 Homestead Road, Duluth, MN 55804.
