Obituary of Steven Binenstock
Steven Binenstock, 63, of Bloomington, MN, died peacefully at home on May 7, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rhoda; sister, Kreindel; and brother, Irving. Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; son, Alex, and his partner Nouchi Yang; daughter, Alyssa Engdahl, her husband Kyle, and granddaughters Eleanor and Genevieve; son, Jake; and brothers, Michael and Bill. There were many family members who meant so much to Steve—far too many to name—each of whom held a unique place in his heart.
Steve was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who shared more than 45 years of love and life with Cheryl, his high school sweetheart. Born in Minneapolis, he worked as a respected real estate appraiser for 40 years and served as a mentor and advisor to many in the industry. Steve loved that his work gave him the chance to explore every corner of the Twin Cities—he knew the Metro area like the back of his hand.
Known for his unbounded energy and warm, easygoing nature, Steve had an infectious smile and a remarkable gift for making others feel welcome. He loved the outdoors—whether hiking, putzing in the yard, or cruising around the lakes on two wheels. He and Cheryl enjoyed spending winters in Palm Springs, where Steve loved golfing under the desert sun and trekking in the mountains. A lifelong animal lover, Steve had a deep bond with Ringo, their beloved family rescue dog.
Steve deeply valued family time. He lit up during Sunday dinners, where laughter, board games, and second helpings were a given—and no dish ever went to waste if Steve was at the table. He delighted in simple joys like outings with his kids and granddaughters, playing games, and sharing stories. As “Papa,” he loved reading books with the girls, chasing giggles, and making everyday moments feel special.
A passionate golfer and backgammon player, Steve especially enjoyed time with his Brookview and Braemar men’s golf leagues, as well as the Twin Cities Backgammon Club, where he formed deep friendships and lasting memories.
His hearty laugh, generous spirit, and positive energy will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held on Monday, July 21st at Hyland Hills Chalet, 8800 Chalet Rd, Bloomington, MN 55438. Visitation 11:00, service 12:00.
