Obituary of Donald Craig Cailliez
Don Cailliez passed away on May 10, 2025, in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the age of 90. Born in Lansing, Michigan on December 10, 1934, to Erma and Firmin (“Kelly”) Cailliez and raised in part by his adored grandmother he called “Gran” and Aunt May, Don was a creative and vibrant spirit who left a lasting impression on many. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School and subsequently attended the American Academy of Arts in Chicago. Throughout his life, Don worked in the creative arts field including, Continuing Education Art Director at Michigan State University, Graphic Artist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, Graphic Designer at Dayton’s, Advertising Director at Donaldson’s Department Store, and Director of Recreation Therapy at Bryn Mawr Health Care, the position from which he eventually retired.
Don is survived by his former spouse and dear friend Linda Cailliez, daughter Margeaux King (Joe), son Jason Cailliez, and grandchildren A.J. King, Connor King, and Bria King, who were deeply cherished by him, along with his family and his close circle of friends.
Renowned for his vibrant personality, Don was an exceptionally talented artist who generously shared his skills with those around him. He was also a gifted actor who starred in community theatre productions both in Michigan and Minneapolis, MN. He had a strong affinity for the Great Lakes, nature, and theatre. His balcony was consistently adorned with flowers and bird feeders, particularly for hummingbirds. His love for nature was evident throughout his home, where he effortlessly created a sanctuary filled with beauty and tranquility.
Don was an avid reader and loved to walk, taking in the sights of the city and nature all around him. His grandchildren fondly remember his playful spirit and the fun he brought into their lives, never missing an opportunity to attend their games or celebrate their successes and accomplishments. Don's memory will be treasured forever, and his spirit will live on in the art, stories, and love he shared so generously.
