Obituary of Philip Foster Engelstad

March 4, 1953 – April 23, 2025

Philip Foster Engelstad, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Emeralds Care Facility in St. Paul, Minnesota, surrounded by love—his daughter and older brother at his side.

Phil was born on March 4, 1953, in Hendricks, Minnesota, to Mary M. Randolph (Hebert) and Maynard O. Engelstad. One of five spirited brothers, Phil spent his early years on a farm in South Dakota, enjoying the kind of idyllic Midwestern childhood that becomes the stuff of family legends. His life was rooted in the values of family, hard work, and storytelling.

He is survived by two of his brothers, Curtis Engelstad and Randy Engelstad, and was preceded in death by his parents and beloved brothers, Gary Engelstad and Mark Engelstad. After the family relocated to the Twin Cities area, Phil’s mother eventually settled in Illinois through her second marriage, while Phil began to forge his own path.

Following high school, Phil served in the United States Army, proudly and honorably giving his time to his country.

Phil built a meaningful career as a photojournalist for KSTP Channel 5 News in Saint Paul, MN. He brought stories to life through his lens, capturing everything from small-town parades to iconic moments on the sidelines of Minnesota Vikings games, and even historic visits such as that of Pope John Paul II to Minnesota. His work wasn’t just a job—it was his way of connecting with the world and preserving its beauty and truth.

When he wasn’t behind the camera, Phil loved boating, golfing, hunting, and fishing. He was a lifelong fan of Minnesota’s professional sports teams, and his voice could often be heard cheering them on.

On December 6, 1981, Phil married Patricia “Pati” D. Engelstad. Through this union, he welcomed two young women into his heart, Lisa D. Tyler and Melissa P. Marengo. Together, Phil and Pati had two more children: Sarah (Chris) M. Clemens and Shawn (Shanda) P. Engelstad. His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren: Kyla, Devin, Vanek, Finley, Phoebe, and Julian.

Phil was a man who savored life’s simple joys. Whether grilling outdoors on a perfect day, telling stories over a good cigar, or cooking a family meal while listening to his favorite music, he lived in the moment. He was a natural storyteller and caretaker, someone who found fulfillment in both the big milestones and the everyday magic.

He was also deeply passionate about preserving family history—sharing stories, documenting important dates and keeping photos and memories for future generations.

Phil will be cremated by the Cremation Society of Minnesota. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes will be spread in three places dear to him: the land where he grew up, land held by his children, and in the warm waters off Key West, Florida—his own piece of "Margaritaville."

A celebration of life will be held in Phil’s honor at a later date. For details, please contact the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Phil was a sweet, loving soul whose presence brought warmth and comfort to those around him. He will be profoundly missed by his children, grandchildren, family, and all who had the joy of knowing him.
