Brian was a wonderful neighbor. He would light up the neighborhood with his beautiful smile. He was proud of his wife, kids, yard and Bella. He will be truly missed. Thoughts with Henrietta and family.

Brian, 林哥, is a kind, loving, caring and handsome brother.
When I was a kid, whenever Brian came home on military leave, he would take me and my youngest brother Chung on his motorcycle for a ride and treats. He would lift us up and place us on the motorcycle’s gas tank. That may sound unsafe, but to us, we always felt love, care, and safety around our big brother.
Brian taught his little brothers and sisters how to roller skate and how to catch a basketball thrown at us with force without fear. He said, “If you hesitate, the ball will hit your face.” It was a simple game, but through it, Brian taught us to be strong and confident.
Brian came to the U.S. in 1975 and reunited with some of our siblings—myself included—five years later. Without our parents with us, Brian always played the role of a loving and caring father. Despite juggling multiple jobs, he still found time to take good care of us, take us to various appointments, patiently teach each of us how to drive, and help us adapt to our new home in America.
I left Minnesota after high school to attend college in California. It wasn’t easy for Brian to let go of his little sister. He came to visit me a few months later and still tried to convince me to move back home with him. A few years later, Brian walked me down the aisle in California and gave me a big kiss on the forehead.
I went on a trip to Vietnam last year and happened to run into the younger brother of one of Brian’s best friends. The first thing he said to me was, “Brian, 林哥, was my role model. He is so handsome and talented.” And deep in my heart, I believed every word he said.
Our dearest brother Brian, you are always our pride. Without you, I would not be who I am today. Thank you so much for your love and support all these years. We love you very, very much. You are always in our hearts. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Dad loved to stay active. Bowling, wind surfing, snowboarding, boating, jet skiing, fishing, home improvements, yard work, gardening, auto maintenance, you name it. Dad embodied persistence and determination.

My father was my first teacher. At a young age, he taught his daughter Cantonese poetry to dictate back. While I cannot recall the poems’ meanings, I remember the distinct cadence, the rise and fall of each phrase, and the rhyme. In the old videos, his voice is the background, giving cues for me to begin each phrase as my little body is rolling around and following his lead. His voice had a strong, distinct command, while the melodies provided a gentleness, displaying a patience for my memory to finish each line in my own time and way. As a teacher now, I reflect on my upbringing and the things my father taught me. This memory is a proud reminder that my home was the primary place of learning, where my father could pass on his oral traditions with the hopes that I would return to find comfort.
