Obituary of Arnold Lanes Moe
Arnold Moe of Bloomington, Minnesota died on April 13, 2025 from congestive heart failure at the age of 99 years and 10 months.
Arnold Lanes Moe was born on June 3, 1925 in Montevideo, Minnesota to Arnold Moe and Alice (nee Lanes) Moe. Arnold was called “Laney” as a child but also came to be known to family, friends and colleagues as “Arnie.” Arnie graduated from Montevideo High School before joining the Army in 1943. He received basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia and continued his training at the University of Illinois before being transferred to the 8th Armored Division in Camp Polk, Louisiana. Arnie was then assigned to “A” Company of the 7th Armored Infantry Battalion and deployed to Europe. Arnie was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Germany and returned to active duty after a month in the hospital, serving in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia before returning to the states in 1946.
Arnie used the GI bill to pay for his college education at the University of Minnesota and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Law. He was a university student in 1947 when he married Marilyn Berglund and had two daughters, Lynette and Bev, while living in campus housing. After graduation Arnie worked for an interstate trucking company; he was a natural born salesman who loved his job and his customers. Two more children, Jan and Jim, followed.
After Arnie’s marriage to Marilyn ended, he found love again with Patricia “Pat” Sandberg. Her two boys, David and John, joined the four Moe kids to round out the family. Arnie and Pat prioritized family and made sure their six children were loved. Sunday suppers at Arnie and Pat’s home became a regular event for their adult Moe-Sandberg kids and their grandkids, with as many as 24 attending some Sundays.
Next to his family, Arnie’s biggest passion was reading, particularly about the Civil War. He read every Civil War book written by Bruce Caton, Shelby Foote and Stephen Ambrose. Arnie could name all the generals on both sides and he and Pat visited nearly all the Civil War battlefields. He was truly a Civil War scholar.
After retiring Arnie served as a volunteer at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for 27 years until he was 93 years old. He loved the VA and took time to get to know the veterans he escorted to appointments. Even as his eyesight diminished from macular degeneration, Arnie could find the location of every clinic, elevator and hallway at the VA.
Arnie lost his loving wife, Pat, in 2016 and his beloved son, Jim, in 2019. He is survived by daughters Lynette (Lynn), Bev and Jan (Dale), and sons David (Margie) and John; grandchildren Mike, Greg, Ami, Jody, Jenny, Andy, Elizabeth, Brian, Jacob, Sarah, Daniel, Jack, Calvin and JoJo; 17 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; special friend Lenore Kane; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
