Mary Ann Weese Lundy Obituary

Mary Ann Weese Lundy, age 92, died on March 11, 2025 in Bloomington, MN. She leaves her husband, Donald J. Wilson, as well as two children, son Jeremy (Cynthia) Lundy of Waverly, MN, and daughter Megan (Jeff) Oberle of Edina, MN, grandchildren, Nate, Brooke and Brynn Lundy, Samuel and Rory Goodell, Roman Oberle, and Elleni (Nathan) Fellows, all in the Minneapolis metro area as well as her brother, Samuel (Ellen) Weese of Wayne, Pa. Mary Ann was the daughter of Samuel J. Weese and Leonora Sims Weese, and grew up in Morgantown, WV. She married Rev. Richard A. Lundy in 1956.

Mary Ann was a graduate of West Virginia University, with a BA in English and Spanish. A lifelong Presbyterian, she graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1957 with a Masters of Divinity degree in a class of 65 men and five women.

Mary Ann taught English, Spanish and Choral Music in Lake County, California and Moscow, Idaho and was an Associate in Ministry at the McKinley Church and Foundation at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. There she also held positions as Associate in the Curriculum Development Lab in the College of Education and taught Women in Religion in Women's Studies.

In 1980 the family moved to Minnetonka, MN where she was Director of Communications in the Presbytery of the Twin Cities. From 1982-87 Mary Ann commuted to New York City as Director of the National Student YWCA. In 1987 she became Director of the Women's Ministry Unit of the newly formed Presbyterian Church (USA), which was later located in Louisville, KY.

A lifelong member of Human Rights and Women's organizations, Mary Ann became involved through St. Luke Presbyterian Church in the Twin Cities in the Sanctuary Movement sheltering refugees in US churches and also in Riverside Church in NYC where she co-chaired the Sanctuary Committee. In 1987 she was named an Unindicted Co-conspirator for transporting Guatemalans to shelter and went to trial in Arizona where she was sentenced to House Arrest at her home in Minnesota.

As Director of Women's Ministry in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and in keeping with the Ecumenical Decade: Churches in Solidarity with Women (1983-93), Mary Ann chaired the U.S.-based Committee. She wrote a proposal for an international theological gathering to study and honor the contributions of women, funded in large part by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and carried out by a Twin Cities ecumenical committee of 150. Held in Minneapolis in 1993 and attended by 2200 international delegates, the Re-imagining Conference was named the "most significant religious gathering in 50 years" by the Christian Century and honored in international religious journals. It was nevertheless controversial in several denominations, but especially in Presbyterian circles, because of the forward-thinking views which came out of the gathering. Mary Ann became the center of theological controversy and was removed from her position at the Presbyterian Church (USA) in May 1994. But subsequently she was honored by Union Theological Seminary with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

In 1995 Mary Ann was called to be Deputy General Secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. While in this position she traveled extensively, was liaison to the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey and chaired the planning for the 1995 World Assembly in Harare, Zimbabwe. In October, 1995 she and Rev. Donald J. Wilson were married.

She retired with her husband, Rev. Donald J. Wilson, to Santa Fe in 1999. After serving on the Governing Board of Ghost Ranch Conference Center, she was appointed Interim Director in 2007-08. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe where she was a Ruling Elder and served as a founding member on the Board of the Interfaith Community Shelter.

In 2023 she and Don moved to Walnut Creek, CA and then moved to Bloomington, MN in January 2025 to be near family.
