Obituary of Kay Joanne Mitchell
Kay Mitchell passed away peacefully on the morning of April 3rd at the age of 87. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Kay eventually made her home in Minneapolis, where she built a long and dedicated career in public service. She began working for Hennepin County in 1969 and retired after 42 years as Clerk to the County Board of Commissioners.
Kay was endlessly curious and full of energy, always eager to get out and explore. She especially loved visiting nature and space museums with her granddaughters and never missed an episode of her favorite British detective show, Vera. She had a deep love for animals, especially cats (with a special place in her heart for her beloved Tutti-Frutti), and regularly fed the generations of squirrels that visited her backyard.
Kay was a longtime and active member of the Twin Cities Bicycling Club (TCBC), where she led many rides, including the Kodiak Kruze. She remained involved with the club until 2022, proud of her cycling adventures both locally and abroad, including trips through France and South America.
Kay adored her family and was immensely proud of her son Scott, her granddaughters Sydney and Jayden, and her great-granddaughter Mayze. She had a flair for storytelling, pulling out photo albums to share memories, and was always beautifully put together, with careful attention to her hair, nails, and wardrobe.
She will be missed by many friends from TCBC, Lifetime Fitness, and the Hennepin County community. Jim Majewski, her companion and dear friend, along with all those who knew her, will remember Kay with love, admiration, and gratitude.
Her family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has reached out with kind words and memories.
