Obituary of Matthew David Fleming
Matt Fleming
Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend.
Engineer, Runner, Animal Lover.
Determined Optimist, Good Human.
Matthew David Fleming passed away at 49 after living with ALS with the same determination, problem solving skills, and positive attitude he brought to everything in life.
Voted “Most Likely to Succeed” and “Best Smile” in high school, he lived up to both superlatives to the very end of his time on earth. Matt succeeded in his career, his ability to develop solutions to tough problems, and his resolve to leave the world a better place.
And that smile? It never went away, regardless of the challenges life threw his way.
Born and raised in Woodbury, Minnesota, Matt lived in Iowa and Wisconsin before eventually returning to the place that was home. He loved to travel, whether it was across the country or just off the beaten path, always chasing something new to learn or appreciate. He enjoyed the planning, he valued the experience, and he treasured the memories that were collected on each adventure.
Matt was an engineer by nature and by trade, which meant he loved to build and fix things. His brain worked like a computer—precise, efficient, and always calculating a few steps ahead. And he was deeply, unapologetically detailed; if you needed help with complex electronics, a meticulous itinerary, or an explanation of how your toaster really works, Matt was your guy.
He was also a runner, hitting the pavement with the same steady determination that defined Matt’s life: head up, heart open, and always ready for a challenge (even when it involved hills that looked insurmountable).
Rescuing animals was a special passion for Matt. Dozens of animals lived their best lives because of his willingness to take in the pets that others did not want. His home was a rotating cast of furry misfits who found in Matt what so many people did too: a safe place, a generous heart, and someone who never judged you for your quirks.
He was kind. He was generous. Matt had a quiet way of taking care of the people he loved. Whether it was through a well-timed fix, a thoughtful gesture, or just being there when it mattered most—he made you feel seen and valued. But above all, he was present—truly present—for those who he loved.
Matt is preceded in death by his dad, Dave Fleming, grandparents, and other cherished family members. He is deeply missed by his mom, Ginger Fleming; his sister, Meri Shanahan; his brother-in-law, Wade Shanahan; his nieces, Bailee and Katelyn; and his nephew, Grant. He also leaves behind his special friends, Charrizma Athen and Maria Nambi; aunts, uncles, cousins and countless others whose lives were made better by knowing him.
Matt didn’t want a big fuss. In fact, he’d probably cringe at this whole write-up. But if you want to honor him, rescue an animal, go for a run, fix something you’ve been meaning to get to, or plan a trip somewhere new… and do it with love—because that’s how Matt lived.
Matt’s family is hosting a celebration of Matt’s life at the Sheraton in Woodbury (676 Bielenberg Drive) on Saturday, April 12 from 3 - 6pm. If you are a member of “Team Matt”, please feel free to wear your gear. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS Association who was invaluable to Matt and his family throughout his courageous journey.
