Obituary of Margaret Laura Orth
March 30, 2025: “Today is the day the Lord has made…” Our mother now resides in her heavenly home. This is the hope for all who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, our King and Savior. Because of Jesus, we can step into God’s presence; because of grace we are welcomed.
A life long lived, she celebrated her 98th birthday on July 25, 2024. She began slowing down in her early 90’s, yet continued to maintain an interest in life. A fractured pelvis in July, 2023 was her undoing. She lived the remainder of her days at the Masonic Home (Bloomington) in Long Term Care.
Born Margaret Laura Bodine in the small town of Tower, MN, located on the southeast shores of Lake Vermillion. By 1930 the family of four moved to Minneapolis seeking a better life. Mom happily became a city girl attending South High School where she met our father. She never lost sight of her love for northern Minnesota and it’s endless beauty. She instilled this love in each of us girls. Our memories are sweet and our memories are long.
She married our father, Robert Thomas Orth on April 7, 1945 at the end of World War II. They celebrated 70 years of marriage until dad’s passing in 2015. During those 70 years they raised four daughters, gaining 9 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. They suffered the loss of their daughter, Linda in 1996.
Mule Lake near Longville, MN became their retirement dream, creating a retreat for our families to enjoy. This was our “happy place” during the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Babies were born and grew into teens. Extended family visited, as well as friends, and friends of friends. A fun filled lake experience was created, shared and enjoyed. Cherished memories for all.
As their 70’s approached a change in climate was imminent. Fountain Hills, AZ - a hidden gem east of Scottsdale met their needs. A completely different landscape from Minnesota, they embraced and fell in love with the desert. It provided the perfect environment for golf, walking, hiking, exploring and mom’s favorite - shopping. At age 80, mom was still doing all these things. Even the hiking. It was an exceptional time and place for our parents to spend those latter years. Many new and repeated adventures. More precious memories.
Our parent’s were blessed with good health and longevity. They came from a special generation that witnessed and adapted to immense change. Graduating from high school, World War II was just beginning, touching their lives and the lives of many. They witnessed a Polio vaccine, the assassination of a President, the introduction of the Internet, to the establishment of the International Space Station. They are a reflection of the Greatest Generation. Their lasting legacy continues on through each of us.
“This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)
We love you mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, cousin and friend … ❤

Please note that mom’s last wish is “no fanfare.” This means she will be cremated and join dad in the Columbarium at Fort Snelling (Sec CC1, Site 92C, Row 14). There will be no service and only a small gathering of immediate family. Her wishes will be respected.
