Michael John Brodie died peacefully on March 29, 2025, surrounded by a loving family and loyal group of friends. Born on November 9, 1936, and raised in Colfax, Washington, his life was marked by a deep sense of service to others. He began his journey as a parish priest in the Spokane diocese. He also taught and served as the athletic Director at DeSales high school in Walla Walla Washington, while performing the duties of hospital chaplain for St. Mary’s hospital.
Michael came to Minnesota with an MA in theology. He earned two additional MAs and became a licensed marriage and family therapist and psychologist. He served the Youth Service Bureau in White Bear Lake and St. Joseph Home for Children before entering private practice in St.Paul from 1985 to 2013, when he retired. He touched countless lives with his compassion and dedication.
Michael met the love of his life, Jane Silon Brodie, in graduate school at the University of Minnesota. They celebrated 51 years of marriage thanks to him being such a loving, caring, and giving partner. They shared a mutual passion for life, which included traveling to all 50 states and visiting many countries with family and friends. Together they enjoyed parenting Sang Young Brodie (Bobbie) and Ahnna Mahoney (Bob). They remember him as someone who supported their activities, shared his love of the outdoors, and encouraged their personal growth and independent thinking. He was a proud grandfather to Kayla Cameron (David), Logan and Lucas Brodie, Crispin and Ezra Mahoney. His grandkids have loving memories of their Papa, especially of the family cabin on Largon Lake, WI, where he demonstrated endless patience teaching them how to fish, boat, swim, kayak, and build fires for s’mores. Family vacations are cherished, especially in Hawaii where tide pools hold endless wonders. These memories of Papa will be passed on to his great-grandson Teddy.
Michael’s surviving sister Jean Earls (Tom) and extended Brodie and Silon family remember him as one of the best, whose impact on them and those around him is immeasurable. They saw him as a man who loved fiercely, lived passionately, and dedicated his life to so many. Michael lived a full life, always bringing people together, whether for a holiday gathering, a weekend at the lake, or a Boundary Waters adventure. His friends were extremely loyal to him and so supportive through his ten-year arduous journey with Alzheimer’s. He will be forever remembered for his kindness, caring nature, and high energy.
The celebration of his life will take place on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 1 PM at the Dodge Nature Center, 1701 Charlton Street, West St. Paul, which is near to his home of 38 years. He delighted in taking everyone he knew for walks in the woods behind their home until he and Jane moved to Marvella Arbor Memory Care Center in St. Paul a year ago. Memorials may be given to Dodge Nature Center, Giving Voice Chorus, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
