Obituary of Marcella S. Stevens

Marcella S. Stevens, affectionately known as “Marcie,” passed away peacefully at her home on March 12, 2025, at the age of 100. She will be dearly missed by her family and countless friends.

Born on July 15, 1924, to Norwegian immigrants Hans and Synneva Ness, Marcella spent her early years on the Minnesota-South Dakota border. At the age of two, her parents took her and two siblings back to Norway as they deeply missed their families and their homeland. However, after a year of struggling to find land in Norway, they returned to South Dakota to raise their family on a modest farm. Marcella grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, experiences that shaped her resilient and compassionate spirit.

In her adult years, Marcella married Howard Stevens and settled in the Twin Cities, where they raised their family. After her husband’s passing, she lived independently for 30 years, managing her life with grace and determination. Known for her kindness and unwavering faith, Marcella devoted herself to helping others and cherished the love of her family and friends.

In her own words, written just days before her passing:

“No extraordinary achievements but made many unforgettable friends. Trying to help when needed. Not judgmental. Trust in God. Amen.”

Marcella is survived by her daughter, Gail (Jerry) Fury; her son, Gregg (Marilyn) Stevens; and her beloved granddaughter, Anna Fury. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Stevens; grandson, Joe Fury; her parents, Hans and Synneva; and her siblings, Oscar (Karen Marie) Ness, Sylvia (Robert) Southward, and Helmer (Donna) Ness, along with many other cherished family members and friends.

Marcella’s life was one of kindness, faith, and deep connection. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. A memorial service will be held at Elim Lutheran Church (Chapel) in Robbinsdale, MN Saturday, March 29th @ 2PM. Visitation one hour prior. Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer’s Society. Many thanks to the wonderful nurses at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospice.
