Obituary of Michael Joseph Gaffey

With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Michael J. Gaffey, known to all as Mike, on January 23, 2025, due to post-surgical complications. He was 53 years old.

Mike grew up in Cottonwood, MN, later moving to Hudson, WI, where he graduated from Hudson High School in 1989. He was larger than life — literally and figuratively — with a booming voice and an infectious laugh. He brought humor and warmth to every room he entered. He loved his children deeply — Declan (18), Moira (16), and Eamon (7) — and took great pride in being their dad. His affection extended to his beloved cat, Olive, and to the many animals he lived with and loved throughout his life. He was also an avid Timberwolves fan, reveling in his season tickets and cheering on his team with unwavering enthusiasm (even when they sucked).

As an adult and new dad, Mike went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Metropolitan State University in 2010, fulfilling his dream of being a college graduate. Other than his children, it was his proudest accomplishment.

Professionally, Mike worked for 11 years at Medica Health Plans in Operations, where he was respected for his dedication, kindness, and ability to lift the spirits of those around him. His colleagues remember him as a valued team member, a cherished friend, and a leader whose generosity and positivity left a lasting impact.

Mike is survived by his children; his co-parent, Megan Dwyer; his father, Leo Gaffey; his stepmother, Vicki Gaffey; his brother, Beau Gaffey; and his cat, Olive. He also leaves behind his loyal and beloved partner, Colisa Lemel, who gave him great happiness over the last year of his life. He is preceded in death by his mother, Jackie Gaffey, and his infant sons, Brendan and Fineran Gaffey.

A memorial service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4343 Nicollet Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55409. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., followed by a service at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully accepts memorials for his children's college funds.

Mike’s humor, kindness, and love will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
