Obituary of Michael "Mike" Peter Kennedy

Michael "Mike" Peter Kennedy, age 84, of Andover, Minnesota, passed away on January 21, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

Born on December 4, 1940, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mike was the eldest child of Ralph "Spike" and Marion (Whitstruck) Kennedy. He grew up in South Minneapolis and graduated from Southwest High School. Mike pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, earning a degree in Social Work, and later obtained a graduate degree from the University of Missouri.

On October 2, 1964, Mike married Sandy (Jacobson) Kennedy. Together they built a life in Ramsey, Minnesota, where they raised their three children: Paula, Peter, and Matthew. Mike dedicated his career to his passion of social work with over two decades spent working for the Elk River school district, positively impacting countless lives.

Mike had a passion for biking, woodworking, and exploring nature. In retirement, he and Sandy traveled extensively to destinations including Peru, Ecuador, Italy, and China. However, his heart belonged to the family cabin on Ten Mile Lake. There, he found joy in fishing with his grandchildren, playing mini-golf, and treating them to ice cream—moments that created cherished memories for all.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law; his son-in-law Todd Bownik; and many beloved farm animals. He is survived by his loving wife Sandy of Andover; daughter Paula Bownik of Oak Grove; son Peter Kennedy (Lisa) of Stillwater; son Matt Kennedy (Elizabeth Lohmann) of Minneapolis; and sister Pat Saewert (Steve) of Venice, Florida.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Mercy Hospital for their compassionate care. A celebration of Mike’s life will be announced at a later date. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
