Obituary of Sherry Kay Jose Sobolik

Sherry Kay Jose Sobolik Sherry Kay Jose Sobolik, 65, passed away of natural causes on January 22, 2025 in her Duluth home.

Born on December 1, 1959, in Lindstrom, MN to Samuel and Katherine (Engdahl) Nelson, Sherry was the youngest of three children. Living on the lake was a joy for their family. Sherry remembered having fun watching her older brothers water ski. She was very close with her maternal Grandmother Minnie, who lived with the family while Sherry was growing up.

She attended Chisago Lakes High School and graduated in 1978. She later attended Hamline University and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1992. She then went on to St. Mary’s Graduate School and completed a Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Psychological Services in 1995. Completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees as a single mother was difficult, but an important and rewarding accomplishment for her.

Sherry spent most of her life in Minnesota. She married Dean Lundholm in 1979 and was blessed with a daughter, Tiffany Kay. She was briefly married to Ken Jose in 1989. Sherry and her partner Scott Langlie were together for eight years and welcomed a daughter, Samantha Jo, in 1996. They lived in North Branch, MN and Thief River Falls, MN. Sherry and Bradley Sobolik were married from 2010 to 2024. They split their time between Hallock, MN and Phoenix, AZ.

In 2003, Sherry renewed her faith in Christ. Every year she celebrated her “spiritual birthday” on 4/11 to commemorate her second baptism. She found strength and purpose in her faith. Her love for God was reflected in her daily actions and the way she cared for those around her.

Sherry worked as a psychologist for most of her adult life. She was dedicated to helping others find healing, peace, and understanding. Her work touched the lives of countless individuals, and her kindness and wisdom made a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sherry had a passion for animals. Later in life she was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of having a horse. Her horse Gunsmoke was a beloved member of the family. Trail riding with Gunsmoke brought her many happy memories (and a few colorful stories too – especially when a rattlesnake crossed their path!) She developed deep friendships and enjoyed riding with her “saddle sisters” in Arizona.

Sherry was also known for her love of games. Board games, word games, pool, cards, ping pong, or any friendly competition, Sherry was ready to play. She brought her competitive spirit to everything she did. While her sharp mind and strategic thinking made her a formidable opponent, it was her warmth and joy in sharing time with loved ones that stands out most.

It was well known that Sherry was a big fan of Diet Coke! Why drink water when you can have a Diet Coke?!

Traveling with friends and family was a highlight for Sherry. Her favorite trips included celebrating high school graduations with Tiffany and Sam in Hawaii, visiting her brother Terry and his wife Gayle when they lived in Florida, walking on the beach with her friend Lynn in California, skiing in Colorado, visiting extended family and friends in Washington, cruising around the Bahamas, and two big trips to Europe with Sam (first to Ireland and Paris, France while Sam studied abroad, and second to Spain, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, and Greece on a Mediterranean cruise after Sam’s college graduation).

Above all, Sherry was a devoted mother. She was incredibly proud of her daughters, Tiffany and Sam. She loved being a Nana to her three grandchildren and had a lot of fun cheering them on at sporting events and school programs. She did her best to guide them, teach them, and support them in every way. Her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will live on in them.

Sherry is survived by her children, Tiffany Goethe and Samantha (Kevin Robin) Langlie; 3 grandchildren, Jacob, Emily and Jordan; brother, Terry (Gayle) Nelson and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Katherine Nelson and her brother Richard Nelson.
