Julius Johnson

Obituary of Julius Peter Johnson

Julius Peter Johnson, 90, of Duluth, Minnesota, died on January 14, 2025, at Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

Julius was born May 7, 1934, to Carl and Susan Johnson in Mantorville, Dodge County, Minnesota. His family moved to Hartland, Minnesota in 1936 where he attended elementary school through eighth grade. He then attended New Richland High School and graduated in 1952.

Julius was a Polio survivor from the age of 6. Polio returned later as Post-Polio Syndrome that confined him to a wheel chair in his last years. He did not complain or feel sorry for himself. He believed complaining accomplished nothing; action accomplished more.

In 1949, Julius met Darlene Molkenthin at a Halloween Party. This chance meeting would prove to be the beginning of a lasting love and friendship. They married in 1955, celebrating their 69th Wedding Anniversary this past September.

Julius retired in 1995 after having worked for Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad until 1959; Super Valu Warehouse, Hopkins, MN 1959 to 1974; United Grocers, Little Chute, Wisconsin 1974 to 1980; and Gateway Foods, Superior, WI 1980. He then spent his time enjoying his two Grandsons, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, quiet slow mornings with a crossword puzzle and a cup of coffee, and surfing the internet with all its “strange nomenclature”.

Preceded in death by his Parents, Sister Joanne, Brothers John, Gene and Alan. Survived by his Wife Darlene, Daughters Julene (Peter) McKinney, East Gull Lake, MN and Jill (Robert) Lane, St. Paul, MN; two Grandsons, Robert Lane III (Alexandria Snodie), Blackburn, Victoria, Australia and David (Hannah Carlson) McKinney, Greenacres, WA; and 7-month-old Great Grandson Arthur John Lane, Blackburn, Victoria, Australia; Sister-in-law Susan Johnson, nieces, nephews and many cousins.

The family would like to thank his care team at Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital. Their compassion, care and guidance through his final days was appreciated.

To honor Julius’s wishes, there will be a private burial in the future for immediate family only. Julius requested that any donations in his memory be sent to the Duluth Salvation Army or St. Luke’s Foundation (Aspirus), Duluth, Minnesota.

Julius’s last request was to share this thought, “In the scheme of things, life is short. Make the most of it.”
