Obituary of Chris Locker
In Loving Memory of Chris Locker
(October 14, 1977 – January 9, 2025)
Chris Locker’s departure from this physical world leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who knew him. Known for his extraordinary talent on the ice and his ability to connect deeply with others, his legacy is one of kindness, humor, and quiet resilience.
Chris’s achievements in hockey are unforgettable. As a standout for Duluth East High School in the 1990s, he helped lead the Greyhounds to the ’95 MN State High School Hockey Tournament Class 2A championship, dazzling fans with his playmaking skills. His partnership with Dave Spehar produced a record-setting 560 career points, still a benchmark in the sport. What made Chris truly special was how he carried himself off the ice: with kindness, with wit, and always celebrating the successes of others.
Beneath his infectious humor and easygoing nature, Chris struggled with his mental health, a challenge so many can relate to but rarely discuss openly. Like so many, he dealt with moments of anxiety and self-doubt.
Chris was someone who cared deeply about people, whether offering an encouraging word during a walk, praising a player while coaching, or simply making you laugh. His presence lifted others, often without them realizing just how much he may have been carrying himself.
In recent years, Chris faced the physical toll of liver and kidney disease with quiet courage. The team at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth provided exceptional care, ensuring his final days were comfortable and surrounded by love. His family is profoundly grateful for the support and compassion they received from the community during this time.
Chris is preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie. He is survived by his father, John, his brothers Mike (Stacy) and Derek (Angie), his nieces and nephews Matthew, Megan, Taylor (Derek), Kaitlyn (Luke), Josh and great-nieces Annie & Audrey.
We will celebrate Chris’ life on Friday, February 7th, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Duluth. Visitation will begin at 3 PM, followed by a service at 4 PM. Friends and family are welcome to gather for a social at Club One Under located in the lower level of the Fitger’s complex starting at 5:30 PM.
Chris’s story reminds us of the importance of kindness, to others and to ourselves. If there’s one thing his life teaches us, it’s that we all carry unseen burdens, and reaching out, even in small ways, can make a difference. In his honor, let’s continue those conversations about mental health, celebrate the victories, and extend compassion to those around us.
Chris was more than his accomplishments; he was a son, a brother, a friend, a proud uncle and coach. He will be deeply missed.
