Obituary of Lorraine O'Day Helling
Lorraine Helling, age 85, of Edina, Minnesota passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 4th, 2025 at Yorkshire Senior Living in Edina.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm Sunday, January 26th at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 7110 France Ave South Edina, MN 55435. Noon visitation, reception to follow memorial service.
Lorraine O’Day Helling was born on February 9, 1939, to Nelvin and Rena Hjelseth and grew up on the family farm outside of Michigan, North Dakota. She loved her parents very much and stayed in contact with them their entire life. Lorraine attended school in Michigan, ND and Lake Region College in Devils Lake, ND. Lorraine married Milo Alfred Helling. She raised six children Teri, Randy, Ronald, Laurie, Rod and Rick while living in the ND towns of Michigan, Lakota and Fargo. Being a mother of 6 children and grandma of 10 grandkids was her true calling in life, greatest gift and biggest blessing.
Lorraine was loving, devoted, protective, strong, proud and caring. She was also selfless, humble, gritty, smart, competitive, hard-working and witty. Lorraine was a remarkable seamstress/tailor and could fix just about anything. Lorraine faced devastating family hardships and great loss in her life. Her resilience and ability to overcome adversity served her well throughout her lifetime. She always came through it because of her relentless spirit and fierce love for her children, grandkids and conviction to never give up and to press on for them.
Lorraine loved to be with her kids and her grandkids and traveled extensively to be with them enjoying countless trips to many amazing events, vacations and places. Lorraine was known for her baking talents, especially her chocolate chip cookies, caramel rolls, fresh bread, doughnuts and rice crispy bars. Lorraine was the foundation of our family, dedicating her life to her family. Lorraine’s genuine kindness, fierce love, strength, warmth and caring nature will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Teri Helling of Chanhassen MN, Laurie (Anthony) Obiazor of Eden Prairie MN, Rod (Pamela) Helling of Parkers Prairie MN and Rick (Tomasa) Helling of Excelsior MN; Grandkids Josie, Jordyn, Isioma, Nneka, Namdi, Chiddi, Jake, Josh, Anna; brother Wayne and sister MarJean, brother-in-law Art (Phyllis) Helling of Roseville MN, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents Nelvin and Rena Hjelseth, her sons Randy and Ronald, grandson Randy, brothers Harley, Maynard and Norbert.
