Obituary of Betty Jane Louise Rod
**In Loving Memory of Betty Jane Louise Rod (1929-2024)**
With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of Betty Rod, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, who peacefully left this world on January 3, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on October 4, 1929, in Anoka County, Betty touched the lives of so many with her warmth and kindness.
Betty’s life was filled with both challenges and triumphs. At just 16, she faced the difficult experience of being disowned by her parents, Herman and Emma Rose. With determination, she took on various jobs in factories and domestic work, showing resilience that would define her character throughout her life. It wasn’t until she met Clifford Rod, a farmer's son from Isanti County, that her world transformed for the better. Welcomed into his loving family, Betty cherished the kindness of Clifford’s parents, who treated her as their own daughter.
As a dedicated farmer’s wife, Betty embraced the many responsibilities that came with farm life. From milking cows to baking bread, gardening to canning, she managed the household with grace and a strong work ethic, all while nurturing her five sons—Steven, Gary, Jeffery, James, and Kevan—and one daughter, Kathryn. Betty encouraged her children to pursue their passions in art, science, and faith, instilling in them the values of hard work and creativity.
Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren—Stephanie, Yancy, Nathan, Nicholas, Trent, Eli, Kyle, Kari Jo, Jeremy, and Larissa—as well as her great-grandchildren, Aiden, Indigo, Nevaeh, Livia, Bodhi, Kaden, Addalyn, Mason and great-great-grandchildren, Roen James, Vera and Ellis.
Betty’s family was her pride and joy, and she often showcased her love through her hobby of photography, capturing countless portraits and serene landscapes that adorned the walls of her home.
Road trips to visit her sister, Shirley, in Washington State, and joyous family reunions at the farm created treasured memories that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her loved ones. Betty had a gentle touch with animals, nurturing several small dogs and cats throughout her life, always remembering them fondly.
In the months leading up to her passing, Betty faced significant heartache, losing two dear friends within weeks. Yet, she remained a beacon of light for those around her. On Christmas Day, during a family dinner filled with love, she began to feel unwell, but until then, she lived her life with remarkable vitality and spirit.
Betty was truly wonderful—95 years young, a talented photographer, and an incredible friend. As she rests now in the arms of love, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit will live on in the many lives she touched.
In accordance with her wishes, Betty’s final arrangements include pre-planned cremation. A memorial event is being organized for the spring at the beautiful Duluth Rose Garden, where family and friends can come together to celebrate her remarkable life. Those wishing to honor her memory can make donations in lieu of flowers to the North Shore Animal League,
Details regarding the memorial will be shared with friends and family as we prepare to gather and remember the extraordinary woman that Betty was. Rest in peace, dear Betty; you will be dearly missed and forever cherished.
