Obituary of Richard Flynn

10/20/1931 - 12/14/2024

Dick was born 93 yrs ago in Slayton, MN to Richard and Peg Flynn, grew up in Duluth, graduated from Cathedral High. He received his BA in History from the U of M in Mpls where he met his wife Carol.

Following 1954 graduation & the birth of their son Steven, he fulfilled his ROTC obligation as an Army Lt. in Michigan where their daughter Kathleen was born, followed by 18 months in Korea before leaving the military.

Returning to Mpls in the early '60's, the family settled into the neighborhood of Pepito's and the Parkway Theater where the roots of his activism began. Dick worked for Wards & Gambles before owning a unique small business making rubber aprons for packing house workers on Franklin Ave. where he hired locally.

Dick was responsible for organizing the 11th Ward DFL anti-Vietnam war movement. He remained active in DFL politics, working to elect candidates committed to the common good, including Carol to the MN Senate.

After retirement in 2000, they moved downtown to join a new community of friends at Loring Green West, helping to preserve the vitality of the city he loved.

As he wished, with the help of Hospice and family, Dick passed peacefully at home.

Dick is survived by wife of over 70 years, Carol, son Steve, daughter Kathy (Craig Anderson), grandson Sean Scannell, granddaughter Megan Scannell (Frank Turano-Cutler), great-grandsons Evan, Roman, Roy, and Norman, along with many friends and admirers of his quick wit and Irish humor.

A memorial will be held in the future.
