Norma Carlson

Obituary of Norma Jean Carlson

Norma Jean Carlson, 78, of Duluth, passed away on February 3, 2021. She was born in Superior, WI on October 27, 1942 to Robert and Beatrice Trautt, Norma was the second oldest of eleven children and grew up first on their farm near Ashland, WI, and then, from the age of eight, on their farm in Iron River, WI. After graduating from Iron River High School in 1961, Norma entered the Sisters of St. Joseph convent in Superior where she trained and worked as a nursing assistant.

After her time in the convent (having decided not to take final vows), she continued her nursing in hospitals in Superior, WI and Rockford, IL. Inspired by the quote “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40), Norma worked compassionately and diligently caring for her patients. Norma took a break from nursing to become a homemaker. In 1970, she married Gordon Carlson, and they raised their two children together in Duluth, MN.

Being a mother and caring for her family was one of the joys of her life. Later, Norma returned to nursing until her retirement, this time working in nursing homes. Norma was an active member of the Spirit of God Lutheran Church and, previously, the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. She greatly enjoyed her church family and the support they provided. Norma had a deep faith and love for the Lord, and she looked forward to returning to her heavenly home.

Norma is preceded in death by her husband and her parents. She is survived by her children, Anna (Tony) Ferguson and James Carlson; her grandchildren, Antony, Adrian, Ariana, and Alayna Ferguson; and her four brothers and six sisters. A memorial service will be held for Norma at the Spirit of God Lutheran Church in Duluth, MN on Saturday, July 10 at 11am with the burial at Forest Hill Cemetery following the service.
