Obituary of Marjorie Irene (Carlson) Hall

Marjorie Irene (Carlson) Hall, 85, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2021 at Diamond Willow in Proctor, MN surrounded by her family. She was born May 26,1935 in Proctor, the daughter of Carl “Roy” and Ethel (Kitto) Carlson and was a proud graduate of Proctor High School. Marge graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1957 with degrees in Speech Therapy and Music. The very next day she married the love of her life Theodore “Ted” Hall and together they raised four children.

The couple moved to the Twin Cities while Ted was in Law school. There Marge worked briefly at General Mills as a recipe taster. Their passion for singing and performing together began and soon the young family was spending their summers at Timberline Ranch, a Christian camp in Vancouver, British Columbia where they entertained hundreds of campers every summer and made many life long friends. This experience led them west to Idaho where Marge was the organist and choir director at Grace Baptist Church in Moscow until they eventually moved to Canada permanently. In 1977 the family moved back to Esko, MN. Marge continued to serve as the organist for Grace Baptist Church in Cloquet for over 20 years. In 1991 the couple “retired” and opened a store front in Cloquet appropriately named MT Nest. The store sold a wide variety of smoky mountain gifts and collectibles as well as instruments and treasures from their travels. In 2003 they moved to White Bear Lake, MN. Marge was still full of energy so she worked at Curves and a local tea house and naturally played piano for the Sunday services at her senior living apartment. After her husband Ted passed she spent some time in Maui, Hawaii until returning to the Duluth area in 2011.

To say music was a huge part of Marge’s life would be an understatement. The family recorded several albums and CD’s over the years. They loved to travel all over the US and Canada with guitars in hand. Although she played numerous instruments, drums were Marge’s favorite and she particularly loved drumming with her high school alumni band Mister Moody’s Marching band in Proctor, which she did until 2005. Marge then joined the Century College Community Concert Band where she played percussion until 2010. She continued to bless those around her with song through her final days.

Preceded in death by her husband Ted; her parents; brother: Donald; sister: Joann Bradley; sister in law: Nancy Engel; nephew: Scott Bradley; nieces: Renee Meyers and Dawn Stellmach

Marge will be sadly missed by her children: Holly (Chris) Johnson of Duluth, Ted (Lesa) Hall of Tennessee, Sheryl (Cory) Zywicki of Saginaw and Rebecca (Zachary) Dahl of Hawaii. 13 grandchildren: Alex (Bri), Joe( Alex), Colby (Taylor), Logan (Zacharius), Keaton (Emily), Jennifer (Nick), Felicia (Khanh), Coy, Coleman, Brady (Melike), Madison, Hunter and Rocco; 6 great grandchildren: Gianna, Braylen, Vilynn, Mila, Kohen and Sunni; sister: Janice Knight of Duluth; brother in law: Robert (Gladys) Hall of Maplewood and many loved nieces and nephews.

Marge had so much love for her family and friends. She never hesitated to open her heart and home to welcome you right in. Her adventurous spirit and endless energy were infectious. She played a significant role in the lives of many, especially her grandchildren. The love and endless support she showed each of them has made a tremendous impact on their lives. She adored them and they will sorely miss their Grandma.

There will be a “party” this summer to celebrate the beautiful life of Marge. After all Margie loved a good party and wouldn’t want it any other way! Date will be announced in June.
