Obituary of Daniel Earl Thompson Jr.

After a life well lived our family would like to announce the death of our dad and grandfather Daniel Thompson, Jr on October 10, 2020 at the age of 87.

Daniel (Dan) was born April 19, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on his mothers birthday who was also a twin.  He is preceded in death by his wife Diane, son James, and siblings, Gayle O’Brien, James Thompson, and Bonnie Busack.  He is survived by his daughter Michelle Kellogg (Chris) and granddaughter Danielle (Lucas Davis), sister Nell Henry (Ed)and many loved nieces and nephews in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Dan grew up in Milwaukee and served in the Army during the Korean war.  After he was honorably discharged he left Milwaukee to move to Minneapolis in 1958.  He was encouraged to move to Minneapolis by his family because he was “up to no good”.  He worked with his dad and soon after met his wife Diane and had his family.  Dan loved Minneapolis and often said “why would I go anywhere else when I have everything here?”

Dan was very involved in his community and believed strongly in volunteerism.  He spent his over 50 years in Longfellow volunteering in many roles.  His greatest joy was volunteering in the Minneapolis Public Schools for over 20 years.

The family would like to give thanks to all those who allowed Dan to live a dignified independent life.  Including the volunteers at Meals on Wheels, the staff at Anne B Sullivan and Anishinabe Academy.   But most of all his neighbors who were extended family.

In lieu of monetary donations, Dan would have liked contributions to go to Meals on Wheels, Minneapolis Public Schools, and the Salvation Army.  Out of respect for Dan there will not be a service.  The family would like to have a memorial in the spring once it is safe to gather.
