Obituary of Dean Calvin Hagen

Dean Calvin Hagen, a longtime resident of Duluth, Minnesota and recently of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2020 at the age of 94. He left behind quite a legacy.

He was born on January 24, 1926 in Sparta, Wisconsin. Dean served in three wars WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and was a Bronze Star recipient. Dean ended his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. He continued his education and graduated from Southwestern State University, Weatherford, Oklahoma and later earned a master’s in education from Presbyterian College in Spokane, Washington.

Dean was an award-winning teacher, singer, dancer, minister, genealogist, computer geek and long-time actor with the Duluth Playhouse. Dean was a friend of Bill W. for over 40 years. He was an avid gardener and renowned for his gardens. Dean and his wife Virginia co-sponsored the Sroy family of Cambodia who adopted him as a second father.

He is preceded in death by his first wife of 2 years Geraldine Mae Hagen and his second wife of 55 years Virginia Ann Snowberger Hagen, a daughter Connie Hagen, a grandson Daniel Berg three brothers Archie, Marlyn and Wendell and three sisters Norma Christianson, Vera Smith and Adeline Gilner.

Dean is survived by his children, Sharon (Rick) Kreis, Jane Hagen, Ann (Robert) Commodore, John (Annie) Hagen, Tom (Beverly) Hagen, and Mary (Michael) Berg; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren.

SERVICES: will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation North Central Chapter, 662 Transfer Road, St. Paul, MN 55104.
