Thomas Matuzak

Obituary of Thomas Michael Matuzak

Thomas Michael Matuzak

AKA “Tom, Mike, Tequila Tom, Toos, Willie, ect.”

Tom was born November 19, 1949. He passed away in Duluth on July 13, 2020.

Tom was a lifelong “West Duluthian” and was famous around town for singing on stage with anyone who would allow him to do so. He especially liked personifying Dean Martin, Tom Jones and Roger Miller- two of whom he sang in person with! “Tequila Tom” became a regular at Mr. D’s. To say he was a “character” would be an understatement! He was loved by many and he loved everyone. Tom struggled with addiction his whole life but he was proud of his past 17 month sobriety. He was available to help anyone for any reason. You’ve heard the term, “He’d give you the shirt off his back”? He would, and he did! He lived and served at the Union Gospel Mission. He volunteered at the DECC, the Chum, the Twin Ports Area Inter Group and he had a passion for volunteering at the local food shelves. He was very involved in the area AA gatherings. He was faithful to call all his siblings on all holidays and birthdays. One of his most favorite things to do was to visit with his customers while collecting fees in the area’s parking booths. “Tiger”, his cat, provided him with much company and pleasure in his later years. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents John & Muriel Matuzak and his brother Bob.

He is survived by his son Tommy John (Gina) Olson and several grandchildren and siblings David (Shirley) McVean, Ronald “Mac” (Nancy) McVean, Midge (Byron) Schelin, Cathy Diver, Cindy (Robert) Vasquez and his cat “Tiger”.

There was a gathering of family and close friends this past Friday. There will be a gathering of West Duluthian friends in the near future.
