John R. Simacek, age 86, of Apple Valley, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 9. John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ragna, his wife of 43 years, Shirley (Pavlik), his brother, Henry, Jr., and his companion Dorothy Poferl. John had many interests: he enjoyed coaching both Bantam Hockey and Little League Baseball in Richfield. He served on the Richfield Planning Commission and was a member of the Minneapolis Airport Foundation Board. Outside of his family, his greatest joy was the many bands he played in, beginning with his own Johnny Simacek Band when he was in Roosevelt High School. For the next 70 years, he played his saxophones, clarinet, or guitar wherever and whenever he could. Currently he had cut back to playing in only three bands, the Zuhrah Flames and Concert Band and the Jammers. John was a member of Lake Harriet Lodge #277, Lake Harriet Eastern Star #202, Zuhrah Shrine, Zuhrah Antique Car Club, American Legion Post #1776, and the Thursday Morning Retired Masons. John is survived by his dearly loved family; his wife, Jane Heller, son, Wayne Simacek (Mary Moore), daughter, JoAnne Simacek-Hillyer (Bradley Tutch), four granddaughters, Jessica Simacek (Taj Riffia), Allison Simacek-Yamtoob (David Yamtoob, Nicole (Tim) Olynik and Melody Hillyer, one grandson, Nicholas Hillyer, six greatgrandchil-dren as well as many other relatives and friends. He is also survived by his bonus family, Larry Heller (Mary Beth), Bill Heller, John Heller, Robert Heller (Theresa Baker). Memorial service will be Monday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Avenue South, Edina, MN. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
