James Henry Martin

Martin, James Henry a lawyer and longtime Stevens County Attorney, died Monday, March 6 in the Memory Care unit at The Glenn in Hopkins of complications from influenza. He was 91. Mr. Martin practiced law in Morris, Minn., for 49 years, and served as Stevens County Attorney for 22 years. He was an active community leader until his retirement in 2001. Jim was born January 11, 1926 in Deer River, Minn., to John and Marie (Carey) Martin. After graduating from Deer River High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 as an artillery gunner. After World War II ended, Jim earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University in Collegeville. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1951. Jim married Kathleen Crosby of Faribault in 1952. They settled in Morris, where they raised six children. After they retired, Jim and Kathy moved to Edina. In 2016, Jim moved to the Memory Care Unit at The Glenn, where he lived for 13 months. Jim loved music, singing, and playing bridge. He was an avid tennis player and golfer, and enjoyed sailing and skiing. Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years; six children: Elizabeth (James) Morrison of Morris, John (Peggy) of Rochester, James F. (Kathy) of Woodbury, Thomas (Julia Held) of West Hampton, Mass., Mary (Bill) Fehrenbach of Stevens Point, Wisc., and Ruth (Bill) Plante of Edina; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Robert Martin and John Martin; and two sisters, Mary Hickner and Patricia Laliberte. Funeral services for Mr. Martin will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 11 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Chapel in Edina, with visitation for one hour before the service. Interment will be at St. John's Abbey Cemetery in Collegeville. The family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer's Association, Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma Research Foundation, or the Stevens County Historical Society.
