Bobby Jo Brumbaugh, age 81, of Northfield, MN, passed away July 29, 2017, surrounded by her family. Her spirit left this world two days shy of her 82nd birthday and one month away from her 62nd wedding anniversary. Bobby Jo was born July 31, 1935, to Robert and Lodi Spaulding. She grew up in Chattanooga, TN, and attended the University of Tennessee, where she met Beverly M. Brumbaugh. They married on August 31, 1956. Bobby Jo graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1957. Bobby Jo enjoyed a lifelong love of travel. During college, she crossed the Atlantic by ship for a three-month tour of Europe. After her marriage, she and Bev spent several years in Heidelberg, Germany, where Bev was stationed as a First Lieutenant with the US Army. Returning to the US in 1961, Bobby Jo and Bev settled in Northfield. They continued to travel with their three children, and the family often returned to Bobby Jo's beloved Tennessee, to visit her parents in Chattanooga and relatives nearby, and spend time in the Great Smoky Mountains. Bobby Jo enjoyed working as an optician for many years. Despite living most of her life in Minnesota, she never lost her southern accent. When people asked where she was from, she often replied she was from "southern" Minnesota. Over the years, Bobby Jo and Bev traveled to all 50 states and had many international adventures, including trips throughout Europe, a Baltic cruise to Russia and Scandanavia, adventures in Thailand and China, where they cruised down the Yangtze River and walked on the Great Wall. Their travels also took them on a riverboat excursion down the Amazon River and exploring Machu Picchu in Peru. One of their favorite trips was a small-ship cruise from South America to Antarctica. Bobby Jo is preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother. She is survived by her husband, Bev, children Monte (Angela), Shawn (Andy Hillis), and Shannon (Heather Mathewson), and grandchildren Robert Abel, Jr., Afton Kelly and Houston Brumbaugh. A memorial service to celebrate Bobby Jo's life will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Northfield. Visitation with the family will start at 10 a.m. at the church, prior to the service. A private internment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul.
